Awareness through Movement® (ATM) Lessons
Personal movement discoveries lead to a range of easeful movement that was previously dormant or unattainable.
Awareness Through Movement® lessons are open to anyone wishing to discover more ease, mobility and coordination in their life. It is ideal for those that find they cannot do the things they used to be able to do and are compromised by pain or stress. It is equally beneficial for those who wish to sharpen their artistic or athletic confidence, elegance, technical abilities or creativity. The Feldenkrais method can give you a new view into how you learn and into the breadth, power and intelligence that is innate to your structure.
In Awareness Through Movement® lessons you are verbally guided through a sequence of gentle movements in a variety of variations. This process is intended to develop a clearer sensory connection and understanding of a particular skeletal organization. Lessons usually take place with you lying down but many involve sitting, kneeling, rolling and standing. The lessons can vary in terms of how challenging they are and all the lessons are approached gently and with respect to each person's tempo and range. After a lesson people often feel they breathe more easily and are walking or standing differently; students often discover a new ability or sensation that they can continue to learn and grow from.
Feldenkrais Insights for Dancers is taught with the dancer in mind and may be more challenging for some than the public classes. These lessons explore the varied and elegant repertory of Awareness Through Movement® lessons created by Moshe Feldenkrais. Dancers are verbally guided through gentle, self-paced movement variations supported by the use of gravity, breath and imagination. These investigative lessons foster individual discovery, ease, articulation and coordination of movement. They are designed to enhance technical potential and power, prevent injury, expand creativity, and self-image. Awareness Through Movement® lessons are ideal for dancers and choreographers nursing an injury, or desiring more range of movement and longevity in their careers. Usually, after these lessons one feels a release of holding patterns and an effortless organization throughout the body, accompanied by a new awareness or ability. This class aims to facilitate the demands of dance class or rehearsal as well as offering nuance and flexibility to the dancer’s artistic expression.
